When Exactly is it Too Cold to Ride?

I went out for a nice road/cross ride at 9 this very sunny morning. Oh, the low last night was 4 and the high today is supposed to be 25. Fahrenheit. According to my mom it was 66 in VA today. Where am I going with my life?

To frostbite town! Thats where. At least thats what it seems like. I had ice in the beard 5 miles in. Maybe this ride was a bad idea?

See Rock City!!!

It was one of those nice little winter rides where you just alternate the feelings of pain and numbness (is that a feeling?) throughout your extremities. On the way back I hit a few hills just to get out of the saddle and get blood moving in my arms, hands, and fingers again.

My bike decided it was pretty fed up with the whole thing about 25 miles in when the BB started sounding like a combo of a car wreck, fingernails on a chalk board, and those people at karaoke get all serious and sing Journey like they aren't an awful singer.

Icebergs on the Color-add-o River.

Perhaps next time I'll go with full leg warmers.

Tuesday Morning Road Ride

Road tubies on the Spooky.  I finally got them trued (thanks Brent at LTR) and decided to do one road ride on them before I pulled the Schwalbes I glued on there 2 months ago to swap for the Tufo cross tires.  And yes, there is a saddle bag on there, and no it does not have an extra tubular in it.  When you dont have water bottle cages you run out of pocket room quickly.

So maybe it wasn't as good a ride as I planned.  Eddie and I did Little Park yesterday and I may have overestimated my current level of awesomeness (but not by much mind you).

Frosty Morning Ride

I left the house this morning around 7 for the first below freezing ride of the fall.

You know it's fall when the leaves are on the ground, there is frost on the roof, and cross barriers are in the yard.

A frosty sunrise over the park.

Sweet truck. I want it.

Caution: bridge may be icy! The first tire slip of the fall was right here. The combination of icy bridges and Colorado River fog makes for some pretty sketch sections around town. But with less and less daylight you just have to suck it and hope for the best

Saturday

Saturday morning we went on a quick hike before the gamecocks played. We tried to hike on the monument but there was a marathon happening and the roads were closed. Instead we drove up little park and did this cool hike that pretty much leads nowhere but has some decent views.

The rest of the day was spent around this

And like this

And

And lots of football. Then a little karaoke to end the night

Maegan singing my humps :) (I tried to upload the video I have but it is currently not working. I'll have to try again later)

'Cross Race Photos

Everyone enjoying a beautiful 40 degree and raining day.  Except Benji, he just decided to sit in the car.
 Nervous laughter...
 Lap 1 barrier chaos.
 WHAT! First lap pwn-age.
Nate and Eddie opting for the conservative approach.
Happy times on Eddies brand new 'cross bike.
Yucking it up with second place after my almost crash.
He's still on my wheel a lap later, this is when I knew he was eventually gonna beat me:(
Cleaning the barriers after only one night of drinking and practice.
 Nate narrowly avoiding being wrecked.
 So deep....

FINISH FACES!!!
 Me!
 Nate!
 Eddie!

Yay/Boo second place!!

Vineyard Bike Ride

Friday we went out for an estimated 25 mile ride that turned into an estimated 32 mile ride that turned into an actual 37 mile ride. It was a nice route through Colorado wine country with a headwind on the way out and a nice tailwind coming home.

Mount Garfield over a vineyard.
